Such extravagance in this summer garden,
ruffled ruby lettuces and purple cauliflower,
the perfect globes of heirloom tomatoes,
garlic, kale and delicate husky tomatillos,
chambered red, green and golden peppers,
orange carrots resting easy in the earth,
bouquets of yellow beans dangling above,
and those magnificent little jalapenos
which will go dancing through our beans
and rice on long winter nights at twilight.
The morning sun caresses the jalapenos,
bringing them to perfect ripeness slowly,
embracing them and kissing them with fire.
If only it would smoke them too. . . .
